Whatcom County is blessed with beautiful forests and mountains, pristine waters and fields. Our rich quality of life is what brings people to our community.

In the next 15 years our population is expected to grow 25 percent. A third of that growth will be our own children growing and rearing their own families. Many more will be drawn here by good jobs and natural beauty. Given the attractiveness of our region, it’s not surprising that the demand for a variety of home choices is immense.

The tremendous demand for homes has driven up prices in the county by 68 percent in the last five years. Young professionals and other middle-wage families are frustrated by the huge price increases that are widening the gap between what homes cost and what a typical family can afford.

Ensuring a variety of affordable home choices is crucial to meeting the needs of a thriving community and the changing needs of its people. Unfortunately, too many are finding they must drive further and further just to find a home they can afford. Commute times lengthen. We spend less time with our families. And when people are forced to live a great distance from where they work, it divides the community and adds traffic to our already-crowded roads.
